Katherine Young, a graphic designer, took matters into her own hands and decided to show Girls’ Life what their cover SHOULD look like. “When I saw the post I was just in frickin’ shock,” Katherine said. “Can this be real? Is this photo fake? After Googling current issues of these two magazines I found them to be real. I was just appalled.”

The reality is that the cover to the right wouldn’t sell as many copies as the original to the left. The magazine itself isn’t the problem. The problem is the pervasive programming of media in general. The worst part of it is how we are so complicit in it. Our kids wear what we buy them. They watch what we pay for them to watch. We have the financial control over their lives, and we tend to be irresponsible with that. “Kids these days” are this way because WE allow them to be. My point is that our parents didn’t allow us (well, many parents). So why should today’s parents feel any less in control?
You are the parent
You are in control. You have to raise your children. Not your schools, not your flatscreens, not society.
If you think the cover on the right is the better cover for your little girl, then foster an environment that encourages those views, and discourages the ones on the left. Teach her early on that’s OK to NOT be the popular girl. Introduce her to role models in STEM, instead of on STARZ.
BTW, does your daughter even know who the girl to the right is? Do you? While she never made any covers, she was featured in a variety of publications, from Scientific American to Teen Vogue. I wish more kids like her made more headlines.
