An insight into Hillary’s political background. It is often touted that she was a Goldwater Girl in the runup to the 1964 election. What doesn’t get more attention is WHY she switched parties afterward.
This also says a lot about her personal character. She was a notable rising star in the flourishing Goldwater Republican machine. Even in hindsight, we can argue that she could have been more popular and more influential had she stayed red. After realizing that the New Republicans of post civil rights had no interest in women’s rights, and were actively pushing back against diversity, she made a moral choice over a political one. A choice she backed up with her efforts as a New Democrat and as a lawyer. There are literally more black students and teachers in college due to her direct intervention in existing practices, just after the assassination of Dr. King.
With all the rhetoric and mudslinging of an election year, it saddens me that the story of Hillary Rodham gets overshadowed by the controversies of Hillary Clinton.
It’s nice to hear it in her own words for once. Even if anecdotally.
