I have a problem with Christian churches who claim that God will take care of our material wants and needs as long as we obey the church. Christ never promised material riches or a comfortable lifestyle for service to God. In fact, Jesus suffered for his beliefs. He shed his material possessions and set out to show the world what God expects from us, by example. When his own brother Lucifer offered Jesus relief from his burdens, the younger brother told him to fuck off. So I have never trusted a pastor who lives more comfortably than his parishioners, especially from their tithes. Jesus never said “Build me a church, and take care of my wants.” He told us to be humble, to look after each other, and to love. You cant seek material gains beyond your needs in the name of Christ.
Ambition and success can be achieved by good Christians. It can be done by not exploiting those who are less fortunate, and it has to be done so that your community succeeds with you. It definitely is not achieved by getting rich off of the poor.
Hundreds of Pentecostal churches have cropped up in Cameroon in the past decade. Now, the government is shutting some down, targeting churches that it says take advantage of poor, desperate people.
