My philosophical/social/political discussions are not just restricted to facebook. Online and off, most of the time, people could care less about the facts that they don’t agree with.

Gun law proponents continue to ignore the facts that the cities with the nation’s toughest gun laws continue to suffer from the nation’s highest rates of violent crime. They ignore the fact that what they want to do doesn’t work when we do it.

Vaccine critics ignore the alarming resurgence of deadly diseases that were thought eradicated because parents have stopped vaccinated their kids. These same critics swear by “anecdotal” results of important studies that kinda sorta link autism to vaccinations.

Creationists ignore the proven science behind man’s ability to adapt and evolve over generations, simply because they think that evolution is absurdly about humans evolving from monkeys or single-cell organisms. They also ignore the obvious fact that the stars in the sky we see now are just echoes of that they looked like millions of years ago, countering the belief that the world we live in is barely tens of thousands of years old.

Pro-Life proponents ignore the fact that Pro-Choice isn’t synonymous with Pro-Abortion. Pro-Choice simply means they support a thought-out decision-making process regarding the value of new life. The same Pro-Choice advocates offer alternatives like adoption, without acknowledging the tragic flaws in those systems that must be addressed if we are really serious about valuing life.

It’s not about being right or wrong. It’s about truth, and what it means to us all. Until we learn to respect the other side of the debate, we will continue to do more harm than good.
