It’s the impact Donald Trump is having on the social consciousness. We have collectively lowered our standards and expectations. Now, everyone has a pottymouth. In days, people I know who usually self-censor with “n-word” and “f*ck” are gratuitously slashing shithole on just about every other posts. Dan Rather used it in a FB post yesterday. Dan Rather.
Democrats have been degraded to mob mentality of the Republicans we’re used to hearing about against Obama. But worse this time around. This time last year, women from around the world were proudly wearing “pink pussy hats.” Women who would have otherwise been too dignified to use such language in public.
If/when this is ever finally over, all of us are going to be ashamed of how low we let ourselves go. We’re going to blame the toupéed cheeto, but it really comes down to our own self-accountability.
I have spent a lot of time transferring much of my FB content to my own site, in part to scrub myself from this social media muck. In doing so, I had to re-read my content with the question – “How am I going to feel about this in ten years?” Overall, considering the times, I feel okay about it. I’ve tried that with a few friends’ timelines, and I can’t say the same.
It’s okay to be angry. It’s not okay to be spiteful. It’s okay to be frustrated. It’s not okay to be vehement. It’s okay to support a cause. It’s not okay to be blindly devoted. It’s okay to be adamant. It’s not okay to be vindictive. Do not sacrifice your morals and ethics, just to stand for/against something.
Remember Michelle Obama: “When they go low, We go high.” I don’t care if “they” are your best friends, fellow idealists, or your own family. Set your standard where it should be, and be the quiet example for those around you.
