In context, July 4th, Independence Day, does not include Black Americans, as we were still slaves and non-voting persons when the United States was born. Constitutional protections and human rights were not extended to us. We did not gain our independence when our nation did. That’s why Blacks get a “special” holiday, to remind us of the true history of American Democracy. That we celebrate our nation’s liberty while still practicing institutional oppression of its own people.
